Student Blog: Embracing the Unity in Our Community

by ASB Vice President Ella P.J. ’17 and Secretary Samantha K. ’17

At this fall's Student Leadership Assembly, the Associated Student Body (ASB) debuted its 2016-2017 theme - "Embracing the Unity in Community" - with fanfare and fun, but a serious mission. ASB vice president Ella P.J. ’17 and Secretary Samantha K. ’17 share their thoughts on how the leadership team determined this year’s theme:

Given the seemingly constant division in our society, from the hype of the election year to social protests, ASB wanted to emphasize the values of unity and togetherness within the Westridge community.  Our theme of “Embracing the Unity in our Community” celebrates the idea of supporting each other and coming together as one community despite our many different perspectives and experiences.

One idea that we focused on during the Student Leadership Retreat was mutual respect; we want to build an environment where students feel comfortable expressing their opinions and participating in difficult conversations, whether in the classroom, Town Meeting, or a Cultural Conversation.  As members of student leadership, our voices are the ones heard most. We wanted to choose a theme which broadcasted our support for those less commonly heard in order to foster this inclusive environment.

We also want our theme to encourage students to think beyond their individual experiences at Westridge: to remember that they are one part of a supportive community with incredibly diverse interests.  From cheering each other on at sports matches to attending theater productions to collaborating inside and outside of the classroom, there are so many opportunities for us to encourage each other in our individual pursuits. We hope our theme inspires an active community and lively school spirit.
