We Are Westridge

Welcome to the Season of Celebration and Reflection
At the very end of April, Westridge hosted its annual Ring Ceremony. This is an important rite of passage for both junior and senior students that serves as a kick-off of sorts to a variety of spring events marking major milestones for our girls. As educators, we know well the importance of celebrating milestones; in addition to being times of great joy, an important end in itself, milestones are opportunities for reflection and giving thanks, both of which play a role in further growth. We hope you will pause with us to celebrate and reflect the joy and growth found all around campus as we finish out the school year. Head of School Elizabeth McGregor’s remarks and a photo gallery from the Ring Ceremony are posted for you here to get you started.

Head of School Remarks
Good morning, I’m Elizabeth McGregor, Head of School - welcome to today’s ceremony at which the Class of 2017 will receive their class rings.
Each year, the ring ceremony ushers in a season of rituals and traditions that marks the passing of another school year and launches the seniors toward a series of events that will culminate in their graduation – on June 10th. It also officially heralds the moment when juniors begin their transition to their position of leadership as seniors.
Today, with college admissions in hand and their senior year drawing to a close, the members of the Class of 2016 deserve our thanks and our recognition for their leadership, their spirit, and for setting an example for others throughout the year. Seniors, we appreciate your many contributions and accomplishments, and we look forward to recognizing you in the days and weeks ahead. (Please join me in acknowledging our senior class with a round of applause.)
Class of 2017, the ceremony today allows you to reflect on your experience at Westridge as well as the values that our traditions, our purpose, and our fundamental principles uphold. I encourage you to take a few minutes to think about the contributions you have already made to our community – and the legacy that you would like to establish in the upcoming year.
The class ring that you will receive today carries two important symbols that were chosen for Westridge by Mary Lowther Ranney, when she founded the school just over one hundred and two years ago: the Ivy and the Lamp.
The ivy represents faithfulness and loyalty. The lamp of knowledge represents the key to a productive life. While the rings are merely a symbol, we ask that you to take the qualities and beliefs that they represent as a serious commitment – today, and in the years to come.
Each year, before we gather for this ceremony, a cake is baked for the junior class. The student who finds a ring in her piece of cake becomes the Mistress of the Rings and receives the first ring. This year’s Mistress of the Rings is Alexandra Langer
The mistress’s role is to assist with the proceedings, and today, Alexandra will present a rose to each of her classmates as each girl prepares to walk across the stage.
Mr. Baldwin, Director of Upper School, will now call the juniors forward to receive their rings.
In preceding incarnations, mcgregor worked as "a hopelessly bored but solvent civil servant, a satisfied however regularly overdrawn teacher, and an absolutely useless and very almost bankrupt antiques dealer." she has additionally written several scripts for television. She has one daughter and lives in dorset, england.
