STEAMWorks Lab Inspires March Madness Table Tennis Tournament

Only at Westridge would a March Madness Table Tennis Tournament grow out of the rocketry class experimenting in the STEAMWorks lab. "After cleaning up from [rocketry] class we all realized we had an interest in table tennis, so we attempted to make some paddles,” said Paloma S. ’19. “Since so many people were enjoying this, we decided to expand the play to include more Upper School participants.”

Twenty-two faculty members and 48 students participated in the Westridge March Madness Table Tennis Tournament (fondly nicknamed the “WMMTTT”), which took place during Upper School lunches last week. Students who didn’t compete showed their support by cheering on their peers, and even breaking out into impromptu renditions of the national anthem and “Surgere Tentamus.”

"It ended up being a great way to bring together students and faculty and staff and was a fun, light-hearted event to reduce stress at the end of the quarter,” said Becca Marcus, service learning coordinator and dance teacher. “Even Mrs. McGregor came out to practice and she was really good!"

The tournament began with faculty/staff and students in separate brackets, but the winners of those two brackets played each other in the finals. Congratulations to our March Madness Table Tennis champions:

First place - Stella Ho, Senior IT Manager
Second place - Paloma S. ’19
Third place - David Prince, Faculty - Upper School Art
Fourth place - Ella W. ‘18

The students hope to make this a new Westridge tradition.
