English Class, Book Clubs, and Empathy

Developing soft skills within core curricula and our social encounters

by Head of School Elizabeth J. McGregor

I recently came across “Reading Your Way to a More Empathetic Self,” a blog post from Donna Orem, president of the National Association of Independent Schools, that provides data on the connection between reading and empathy. This is something all English teachers, librarians, and book lovers know intuitively. But as we focus on empathy and connection this year, Donna’s insights opened my thinking and reflected what I have been experiencing in recent months as I have expanded the groups of people with whom I am having book discussions. I hope you will read the post and let me know what you think.
