Last week, our Upper School 3D Design art class attended a bonsai workshop at the Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens with Ted Matson, curator of the bonsai collections. Mr. Matson explained the process and history of bonsai, and showed the class the bonsai nursery where they maintain and cultivate the plants.
The class is currently making sculptural vessels to house a bonsai, working with a range of materials including clay, concrete, wood, and 3D-printed materials, to make the vessels, said Mr. Prince, who teaches the art class. The students are working with dwarf jade plants to shape their own bonsai trees. "The bonsai shaping will be a slow process, developing gradually throughout the school year," Prince said.
