Fifth graders in Lower School Art Teacher Val Trimarchi's class were inspired to create clay masks featuring animal motifs and patterns inspired by their study of African art during Black History Month. The class practiced their sculpting skills using a form to create the basic shape of a mask, then worked on glazing—learning how to properly glaze, how colors and finishes will translate after firing, and how to work through mistakes (like glazing around broken pieces that can be attached later in the process!).
