On the last day of Black History Month, members of the Black Student Union (BSU) participated in Love Your Hair Day, a day inspired by the CROWN Act passed in 2022. The BSU invited the Westridge community to “embrace their hair naturally or in protective hairstyles to show support to the Black community in one of the most unique aspects of Black culture and heritage.”

What is the CROWN Act? In March 2022, the CROWN Act (Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair) was passed by the House of Representatives to protect people against discrimination based on their hair. In California, the CROWN Act was signed into law in 2019 but as of 2023, only 19 states, along with Washington D.C., have passed CROWN laws. The CROWN Act has yet to be passed federally.
