Ahead of next week's holiday, the Westridge community celebrated the Lunar New Year throughout campus with activities and performances that honored traditions and culture!

  • Lower School student volunteers performed a beautiful dragon dance on Herrick Quad for students, faculty, and staff. And, new this year (!), Upper School students joined the assembly to put on a spectacular lion dance! While the dragon paraded across Herrick Quad, the lion pranced and leaped following Cai Qing tradition, where the lion "eats" vegetables along with an ang bao (red envelope) containing money. The performance concluded with the lion spitting out lettuce leaves, symbolic of it spreading good fortune to everyone watching.
  • Upper School enjoyed a lunchtime Lunar New Year Fair on Madeline Court, where students learned about Lunar New Year traditions and Chinese culture through multiple interactive table displays put on by Upper School Mandarin classes and Upper School Affinities. Exhibits included Chinese calligraphy, mahjong, bracelet-making, mask painting, and lots of food-tasting stations!
  • Celebrations concluded with an impressive kung performance!

We wish you all a prosperous Year of the Horse! Check out a photo gallery here of the celebrations.
