Congratulations to the 6th graders who yesterday put on a wonderful Historical Gallery Walk: Celebrating Women of Courage and Character—the culminating project of 6th grade history! This year's gallery walk showcased the often-overlooked stories of women in history including their achievements, challenges, and legacies. With direction from Lower School History Teacher Linda Peacore, students...

  • Researched their chosen historical figures (including Japanese samurai Tomoe Gozen, American aviator Bessie Coleman, English writer Virginia Woolf, and so many more!)
  • Created objects to represent their figure's achievements and legacy
  • Wrote a dramatic monologue—imagining themselves  as characters in the figure's story
  • Put together a digital exhibit (including a recording of the monologue and an information sheet)

To represent these historical figures in culturally appropriate and dynamic ways, the 6th graders heard from Westridge Director of Equity Ian Tatum and Director of Theatre Brandon Kruhm.

Eva B. '30, who chose American geologist and oceanographer Marie Tharp, observed how one could do such a big thing—as Tharp did—and still be looked down upon or ignored. Maddie B. '30, who researched French secret agent Andrée Borrel, said, "It was really interesting to learn about someone so young who made such an impact."
